Brief History of the Kayasthas
All North Indian Kayasthas are are said to be descendants of Chitragupta. As far as mythological origins of the community are concerned the Kayasth believe that they originated from Chitragupta. Chitragupta himself was created by Brahma from his body. Brahma is believed to be the Creator in the Hindu trinity. The newly created Chitragupta was entrusted to Yama, the hindu God of death to record the good and evil actions of all humans and produce the net results when they arrived after death. From Chitragupta's two wives Eravati and Nandini, were descended the twelve main endogamous subdivisions of the Kayastha people, namely Mathur, Bhatnager, Saxena and Srivastava from the first wife and Gaur, Nigam, Asthana, Surajdwaj, Awastha, Karan, Kulshrestha and Balmiki from the second wife.
Kayasthas mostly belong to the Hindi speaking states of UP, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Delhi. Two other regional communities also lay claim to the name Kayastha. These are the Prabhu Kayasthas of Maharashtra and Bengali Kayastha of West Bengal. They were also the 'writing caste' in Maharashtra and West Bengal , like the Chitragupta Kayastha of North India. Kayasthas also migrated to various other parts of the country. Most of the Kayasthas who shifted to Hyderabad, were from Delhi and UP, in the middle of the Eighteenth century. They got employment in the court of the Nizam. In 1820, out of the 400 North Indian Mansabdars, 60 were Kayasthas. There are about 3000 Kayasthas residing in Hyderabad. They have adapted to changing political environments. Since the last two decades there has been
-a movement from government services to independent professions by the Kayasthas
-women joining the work force
-exodus of young professionals working and settling abroad like USA, UK and Australia.
In many respects the Kayasthas reflected their close association with the Mughal administration and culture. But within stated principles and written domestic religious observance, Kayasthas conformed to the basic patterns of Hindu civilization. However, it is the God Chitragupta who comes in for special reverence as the divine progenitor and community deity. Twice a year the Kayasthas worship the pen and inkpot, which are Chitragupta''s tools, and a symbol of their profession
With the passing of time, the Kayasthas surged ahead. They have broken new grounds in vocations other than those relating to writing and record keepin, and excelled in them. Thus, in public life, Dr. Rajendra Prasad rose to become the first President of India, whereas Lal Bahadur Shastri succeeded Nehru as the Prime Minister.Dr. Sampurnanand was the Chief Minister of UP and Governor of Rajasthan. Subhash Chandra Bose fought the British rule militarily. Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar and Jagdish Chandra Bose were eminent scientists. Swami Vivekanand was a philosopher. Amitabh Bachan and Shatragun Sinha excelled in the celluloid world and Mukesh and Sonu Nigam in the world of music.
